Lockdown - Postcards from Pembrokeshire

Over the past 12 months, in common with people throughout the world, the people of Wales have spent extended periods of time in Covid Lockdown. For many, travel, by anything other than on foot, has been restricted. The images I post here have been taken by me over the past few months, they represent glimpses of thoughts, feelings and brief experiences of my personal journey through Lockdown.

Lockdown - Postcards from Pembrokeshire

My mind is in darkness. At times like this, I become very physically tired.

Before Lockdown, my favourite solution, one that would soothe my spirit and bring me the healing I need, was to drive to a favourite place in nature. There, I would immerse my senses. I would listen to the sounds of trees - woody, whispering, moaning, rattling, twiggy sounds. To the watery sounds of rain, rivers, brooks, streams and the sea. To the call of birds and the sound of wings passing through the air.

I am sure my love of photography arises from my relationship with the natural world. It is only there that I feel at ease and truly happy.

Although I understand the need for Lockdown, I find it very difficult. I know we are all suffering, this helps me to try and bear with it, but even though I live close to the coast and in a wonderfully scenic place, there are not many truly quiet places in walking distance.

Understanding my difficulty, Stephen, my husband, offers to sit for a portrait. He’s generally a reluctant model, but occasionally, in order to lift my photographic spirits, he will sit for me. I see a vulnerability in this image, and something of Stephen himself which I can’t put into words, so it pleases me. To finish the photograph I add a layer of abstract green from nature.

I am looking forward to the time when we can all resume the activities that bring us solace and joy.
